“A new baby is like the beginning of all things—wonder, hope, a dream of possibilities.” – Eda LeShan
Not long after Luca’s Fresh 48 session (you can view the gallery here [link]), I had the joy of visiting the Böhmer family at their home in Pretoria for his newborn session. I love telling a family’s story through photography, so being able to serialise these sessions and track Luca’s progress from pregnancy to newborn is a huge honour.
Newborn sessions have their own unique challenges, as you’re working with a tiny person with immediate needs that will always take priority, and you can hardly give your model direction. They have their unique joys too. Taking that perfect shot which captures the feelings of tenderness and love as the family gently holds their newest tiniest member is very special.
This was definitely true for the Böhmer family. Mom, Dad, Gran and big brother each had their turn posing with a quiet and peaceful Luca, and each shot tells its own story. Okay I lied, little Luca was not quite and peaceful at all, he was very upset and unsettled. That is why you need to hire someone with experience in handling newborn little ones. It’s our job making these sessions look peaceful and quite. I job we love, a job we are good at 😉
It’s amazing to see how much he has grown in the short time between his birth and this shoot. I’m sure these first special moments will never be forgotten and I am so happy to be part of recording them.

The impact of the corona pandemic has really reached deep into our hearts and homes. Pregnant moms and expecting families have had to adjust their expectations of what is an already stressful time in terms of adapting to a new little life.
The next hour was the hardest for me, it felt like torture. It had gotten dark and we lit candles around the bath. I was trying all different positions, but struggled to find something bearable. I had worked so hard on breathing and relaxing, but when the contractions came it was so crushing, all I could do was ride it out and wait for it to be over.
