Our Home Birth Story: Gert and Nadine Strydom 10 November 2022

Embarking on our second pregnancy journey, Gert and I were determined to make it a unique and intimate experience. Opting for a home birth with the guidance of our trusted Midwife, who had been with us for the birth of our firstborn, and ensuring our 5-year-old could be part of this special occasion, we eagerly awaited the arrival of our newest family member.

A Twist in the Home Birth Plan: Breech Position

At 36 weeks, a routine checkup revealed an unexpected hurdle—our baby was in a frank breech position. Presented with the options of an ECV or a C-Section, we embarked on a journey of chiropractic sessions, spinning baby exercises, and even a Hypnobirthing breech script. Miraculously, just before opting for the ECV, our baby turned head down, setting the stage for the home birth we had envisioned.

Signs of Labor: The Waiting Game

Approaching 41 weeks, I woke up at 3:00 am feeling uncomfortable and sore. Not wanting to disturb my husband, I began timing surges, suspecting the onset of labor. Communicating with my doula and Midwife, I remained calm as the surges were irregular. As the morning progressed, surges stopped, leading me to take a nap. Later, surges intensified, prompting the start of the Miles Circuit and signaling the beginning of active labor.

The Home Stretch: In the Pool

Entering the pool, I felt the urge to push, and with a distinct “pop,” my water broke. Despite moments of doubt, the support from my doula, husband, and the birth team guided me through. Armandt made his entrance at 16:52, a perfect 2.96kg and 48cm. The bliss of holding him and the anticipation of introducing him to his older brother filled our hearts.

A Perfect Home Birth Ending, Followed by a Curveball

Our perfect home birth, however, took an unexpected turn when my placenta refused to deliver. Despite attempts in different positions, we made the difficult decision to go to the hospital for its removal. Though not part of our plan, the decision proved crucial for safety. The subsequent pain was intense, but with the unwavering support of our doula, we navigated through the unexpected, breastfeeding Armandt even in discomfort.

Lessons Learned: Trust in the Journey

Our home birth story reaffirms that plans may evolve, but trust in the mind and body prevails. Armandt’s arrival, the placenta complication, and our hospital visit became integral parts of our unique journey. Three days later, reunited as a family of four, we embraced our new adventure with gratitude and resilience. Life, in its unpredictability, taught us the strength within and the beauty of embracing the unexpected.

Racing Towards Miracles: The Journey to Leroux Rein’s Birth

It was incredible to whisper courage into your ears and see you take leaps moments later towards our freedom. You had many holes in your body, but I tried to hold your hand through this time and be there as much as possible, so that you wouldn’t go through it alone. Some holes in your body, some in mine. Daddy and I took turns to cover the day shift as well as the night shift.
