Embracing Change: Ronel Kotzee’s Unforgettable Birth Journey
“In the journey of motherhood, we often find strength not in the absence of challenges, but in the ability to adapt, embrace change, and build resilience. Every birth story, with its twists and turns, is a testament to the extraordinary courage within every birthing woman.” – Ina May Gaskin
Embarking on the journey of motherhood, Ronel Kotzee envisioned a natural vaginal water birth from the start. However, the twists and turns of pregnancy led her to unexpected challenges and decisions that reshaped her birth plan. Join Ronel as she candidly shares her emotional rollercoaster, the resilience she found within, and the invaluable support of her birthing team.
Discovering the Unexpected: Breech Position and Tough Birth Choices
“From the start, the dream of a natural water birth fueled my journey into motherhood. Assembling a pro-natural birth team, we eagerly looked forward to the moment at City View Birthing Retreat with our second midwife, Sr Willemien Kool. However, a curveball struck at the 36-week checkup when we discovered our baby was in a frank breech position, shattering our hopes for the envisioned birthing experience.
In a whirlwind of emotions, options presented themselves – an elective cesarean, an External Cephalic Version (ECV), or monitoring until 37 weeks. Fearing the risks of an ECV, my partner and I embarked on a desperate attempt to turn the baby using spinning babies exercises and chiropractic visits, but the outcome remained unchanged.
Seeking Alternatives: The Search for a Birthing Solution
Devastation set in as the reality of a c-section at 39 weeks became imminent. Struggling to accept this change, I reached out to numerous midwives for alternatives, only to be told that, as a first-time mom, my options were limited to waiting for the baby to turn or opting for a c-section.
Desperate for a solution, Sr Gail De Vos, a compassionate midwife, stepped in, connecting us with Dr. Mia, renowned for his success with ECVs. Dr. Mia’s detailed scan revealed challenges – minimal amniotic fluid, the placenta in front of the baby’s face, and a frank breech position with the baby’s bum already descending into my pelvis. Despite a gentle attempt at an ECV, our baby defiantly returned to the original position, confirming the inevitable need for a c-section.
Acceptance and Understanding: The Shift in Perspective
Acceptance became a journey in itself, and I found solace in understanding the complexities that made a c-section the only viable option. Dr. Mia’s transparency about the birthing process allowed my partner and me to make informed decisions. The silver lining emerged when Dr. Mia offered us the chance to let labor commence spontaneously if it happened before the scheduled c-section at Genesis Maternity Clinic.
As the 40-week mark loomed, decisions about the birth became pivotal. Despite my initial desire for spontaneous labor, we prioritized our baby’s well-being, opting for a scheduled c-section at 40.2 weeks. The birthing team, including Sr Gail, birth photographer Sam, and doula Tamryn, provided unwavering support, turning what seemed like a daunting experience into a cherished memory.
The Supportive Birth Team
Fear of needles and the anticipation of the c-section loomed large, but the reassuring presence of Sr Gail, Sam, and our doula Tamryn made the experience more manageable. Tamryn’s calming demeanor and support were pivotal in easing my anxiety, and her laughter became a source of comfort in the room.
Sam’s dual role as both doula and birth photographer brought a unique dimension to our journey. She provided insights into the birthing process, explaining what to expect during the administration of the epidural and maintaining a light and cheerful atmosphere alongside Tamryn. Sam’s expertise as a doula shone through, guiding me through the emotional and physical aspects of the birth.
A Different Path: Capturing the Unforgettable Birth Story
In the end, the dream of a natural water birth evolved into a gentle c-section, and while the path changed, the support of an incredible birthing team, including Sam and Tamryn, made the journey unforgettable. The sneak preview photos provided on the same day were an unexpected delight, allowing us to relive the magic of our baby’s arrival.
Thank you, Sam, for your compassionate support, insightful guidance, and the priceless gift of capturing our unique birth story”
